Interview with Raul Urias – Winner of Groopti’s Art Print Contest

Raul Urias, a young graphic designer from Chihuahua, Mexico, is the winner of Groopti’s Art Print Contest held last month. We asked him a few questions about his work and inspiration.

What made you choose to be a graphic designer and illustrator?

I was always interested in the graphic arts and I thought graphic design was the field that was as close to what I liked.

Since when did you get an interest in drawing and illustration?

Since childhood I have drawn, as a boy I wanted to be cartoonist when I grew up. I met people who are devoted to comics and they learned much of what is, techniques, anatomy and color.

After college and study, the visual arts career, which ended several months ago, I was led to dedicate myself more to illustration and design.

Your designs are very colourful. How do you get the preference?

It was a process. I think it is the mix of all my tastes and influences. I have always been in search of a personal style as an illustrator and the final color of my designs comes naturally, it is a process of maturity and finding things I can ientify with.

I really like the work of people like: Seher One, Hydro 74, Gabriel Moreno, Iain Macarthur, McBess, I am Gabz ..

Where do you draw inspiration from for your designs? Where did you draw inspiration from for your winning submission?

All my designs can say that they have a “logical”, I think they’re inspired by everything I love, like music, dynamic forms, color, euphoria, convey feelings and personal moods.

In the design of birds and roses what inspired me is the beauty of women, like my girlfriend, also add elements that would look good for me in the design such as birds, flowers and abstract forms dynamic, this makes the design has a harmonious composition.

I always try to make my designs convey something, in this case I wanted to convey beauty and peace.

What advice would you give other young designers such as yourself? What is some good advice that you received and successfully followed?

I do not think I have a successful career yet, I’m still on that path to establish myself as a professional illustrator, the only advice I can give is that if you believe in what they do and never stop, always keep looking the way your work reach more people, knocking on doors, the internet is one way to do it, have your portfolio in line to be in communities of artists and always be self-critical.

You have to know whether what one does is well done or not, compare what you do with people who are really dedicated to this and see if what you do is good, it always makes you do things better, always try to be on the next level.

What do you think is missing in the design community? What do you feel you needed in support but wasnt there?

I think the design community is very large and more for internet forums and websites where one goes up the portfolio, I just think that especially young designers and illustrators should be a little more critical in their work and focus more work to be better at your job it is to be Rockstars just for fame.

What do you think of the idea of Groopti?

I think it is a very interesting proposal, a new way for visual artists, designers, architects and other designers to showcase their work and have a good healthy competition, as well as products produced with the works of the designers.

On average, how long does it take you to make one design?

Designing takes about 1 or 2 days, since first I have to think about the idea and concept, then sketch and design, and then to the computer.

What programs do you usually use on your computer?

I mainly use Adobe Photoshop, because from there I can directly illustrate my Wacom Intuos 4 and I usually use Illustrator for vector work.

Can you tell me a bit about what you are working on currently?

Currently working freelance, designer and illustrator from my house, I have several projects, I am illustrating for a Mexican brand that produces kitchenware and I have also designed T-shirts, album covers and magazines among other things.

Congratulations Raul!!
